This has been one of the hottest weekends of the year so far. It's finally feeling like summer, hot enough to actually want to jump in the cold waters of Lake Tahoe or Donner Lake. It will cool down again by mid week, but still be very comfortable. Good hiking weather! The early forecast for the upcoming Fourth of
July holiday weekend is for fair and slightly warmer conditions, great for a picnic, boating on the lake, a BBQ, anything you might want to do to celebrate the fourth. Can you believe it's almost July? It seems like summer has barely begun.
Lake Tahoe is an incredible place to view Fourth of July fireworks. From almost anywhere on the lake you can see multiple, multi-colored bursts of green, red, blue and fiery orange lights fill the sky as rockets are launched from various locations around the lake. In addition to the large "Star Spangled Fourth - Lights on the Lake" event in South Shore Lake Tahoe, there are many North Shore Lake Tahoe events in Kings Beach, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Truckee (Donner Lake), Incline Village, and West Shore Lake Tahoe. Two of the most memorable for me have been in Tahoe City and at Donner Lake. I experienced the Tahoe City display one year from a classic wooden boat out on the lake, bobbing gently up and down in the water surrounded by about 50 other vessels hidden in the darkness. Suddenly, rockets exploded overhead in the night sky with a loud boom and a shower of lights as the the view was reflected many times over in the shimmering water. Other columns of color could be seen erupting in the distance from several spots around the lake. It made for a memorable fourth. Even if you can't get out on the lake in a boat, there's a great view of the Tahoe City Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration from Commons beach. You can come early, have a picnic and claim a spot on the beach. There will be a free concert from 4-7 with Subjektochange, a popular local band. Visit www.visittahoecity.com for details.
Donner Lake also holds a similar event with picnicking and other activities on the beach during the day, and a very exciting, loud and "up close and personal" overhead fireworks display in the evening. This was another memorable Fourth of July event for me. You could also attend the very traditional Downtown Truckee Fourth of July parade at Commercial Row. This parade, complete with flag draped firetruck, has a wonderful small town feel lost in many big cities these days.
If you're staying at Olympic village Inn, you could just decide to stay close to home, avoid the traffic, and attend the Squaw Valley 4th of July Fine Arts & Crafts Festival. Held outdoors at the Village at Squaw Valley USA, this event to celebrate art will feature more than 45 award-winning artists displaying a variety of artwork including photography, oil paintings, ceramic vessels, jewelry and more. The event is free and will take place Friday and Saturday, July 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.squaw.com or www.pacificfinearts.com for more details.
There's lots to do in the Olympic Valley, Lake Tahoe and Truckee area this Fourth of July. Check our Olympic village Inn Facebook page for more ideas and updates. The hard part is deciding which events to attend. No matter what you do, a fourth of July in the mountains is guaranteed to be something you'll remember for a long time. Happy Fourth, everyone!
