The weather‘s going to be the story this week, not because
of snow and wind that you might expect in mid March, but because we’re going to
get a preview of Spring . Yeah, warmth! Squaw Valley got 14” of snow in the
Friday storm and is reporting a 182” base on top, so that should last well into
June. No storms are forecast this week, only sunshine and Spring Fever.
Winter’s not over yet but we can take a break and enjoy a week of nice weather. It’s perfect timing because Daylight Savings Time just started (you did change your clocks didn’t you?) and that always puts me in the mood for warm weather, BBQs and swimming. I wouldn’t recommend the swimming just yet, but if you can shovel out the BBQ you can certainly enjoy some ribs. The skiing should be great. There’s plenty of snow but you’ll probably only need a light jacket in the afternoon. If you’re really brave you might even wear shorts but beware, a fall can take off a lot of skin if you slide across some of that refrozen groomed ice. It happened to a friend of mine and he was not only missing skin but had to suffer the embarrassment of being scolded by the Ski Patrol. What was even more embarrassing was that he was in his 70’s and the Ski Patroller scolding him was in his 20’s.
If you’ve been thinking about buying new ski equipment, this is a great time of year to do it. The ski shops are anxious to move their inventory before the end of the season and you can get some great deals on brand new gear. There’s still plenty of time to use it, too. Why wait until the snow’s gone? I’d hate to have to stare at those brand new skis just sitting there in the closet all summer. A buddy of mine, who’s a self described “ski addict”, just bought a new pair and says “These are the infamous (like really bad, dude) VOLKL AC 30 skis that are about 100 times better than sex………well maybe 50. They sound like good skis! ……..or maybe he just needs to get out more.
A fun upcoming event and another cure for the post Olympic withdrawals will be taking place at Squaw Valley USA March 23-28. It’s the U.S. Freestyle Internationals and Olympic Celebration. The completion in the half pipe and mogul will be on March 25-28 and will include a post Olympic Celebration for the US Snowboarding and Ski teams. You can get all the details at www.squaw.com/us-freestyle-nationals. Be sure to check out our Olympic Village Inn Facebook Page and Twitter updates for more news and events. Olympic Village Inn is a great home base for area activities so check out our Winter Specials. Another activity, located conveniently in Olympic Valley, is WineMake’s Tasting with Duckhorn Tasting. It’s March 19-20, Friday and Saturday, between 4pm and 7pm. You can call (530)584-6090 for details. Now that sounds like a great way to treat Spring Fever.
